Woman's Protest

Imagine being chained to a doghouse for 825 hours. 

 

That is how long one activist has been chained over the past 18 years as she pushes for better laws to protect man’s best friend. 

 

Tamira Thayne is on a seven-state tour, making her first stop in Charleston on Monday. She is chaining herself to a doghouse on the steps of the state Capitol in hopes of getting stricter laws against tethering across the state. Virginia Legislator Seeks Restrictions on Pet Owners who Chain their Dogs
 

Does chaining make Fido fierce? Fewer children might be maimed and killed in dog attacks if we treat "man's best friend" as a member of the family, a Virginia legislator says.

Algie T. Howell Jr., a Democratic delegate from Norfolk, will introduce a bill in the General Assembly next month that would make it illegal for pet owners to chain their dogs for more than three hours a day.

The state of California passed a similar law in September.

Amy Hammer found herself haunted by the thought of a dog - a pit bull belonging to one of her neighbors - that spent its days perpetually chained up in the yard, flies plaguing two stumps where its ears had once been.

“I lay in bed at night and see this dog’s face,” said Hammer, a Staunton resident and avowed dog lover with three pets of her own.

Tethered Dogs Might Be on Short Leash

March 16 2005, SMITHFIELD, VIRGINIA --

 

Smithfield dog owner Danyell Redd doesn't think much about a proposed town law that may keep her 60-pound, 8-month-old Rottweiler puppy indoors instead of being in her backyard for a few hours , tied to a tree with a heavy chain. "Stupid," she said. "Not all dogs are house dogs."

 

But more cities and counties are beginning to think differently. Smithfield could become the 69th locality in the country and the fourth in Virginia to enact a law that tells dog owners how or if they can tether their pets. Northampton County and Norfolk have laws. In January, Virginia Beach City Council made tethering dogs for more than three hours illegal.
